Help Support Burlington’s Juneteenth Celebration!

Dear Plymouth Members and Friends:

It seems like an awfully long time since we’ve gathered together in worship. But as Reverend Becky has reminded us, so much of the work of our church goes on outside the building.

Over the past several months, I have become involved with the Burlington Coalition to Dismantle Racism. BCDR is a local group that has been working to raise awareness of racial discrimination within the Burlington area, particularly in the school district, and to actively rectify the harm that has been done to people of color in the community.

BCDR will be holding our second annual Juneteenth Rally on Saturday, June 19, from 2:00-8:00 PM, at Echo Park. Juneteenth commemorates the day on which the last group of enslaved people in Texas found out about the Emancipation Proclamation and discovered that they were now free.

This event is free and open to the public and will feature speakers, musicians, dancers, and other artists of color. There will be food, beverages, and children’s activities. It will be an educational program as well as a call to action against racial injustice. I hope to see many of you there.

Plymouth’s Missions Team has pledged to donate $250 in support of this event. As the leader of the Social Justice Team, I would like to challenge our congregation to match this gift. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity. Even small amounts add up to a lot. You may mail or bring checks to the church office (with the notation “Juneteenth Missions Challenge”) or donate online through the church website. Please have your gifts into the church by Sunday, May 31.

In the spirit of Jesus Christ, who loves us all, I thank you.
