As the Gospel of Mark records it, all of a sudden, Jesus is near Caesarea Philippi, a predominantly Roman setting and an area that was historically the edge of ancient Israel’s northward expansion. Again out on the fringe. It’s here that Jesus pops the question, “Who do people say I am? What’s the gossip?” The disciples are thinking, now he wants us to discuss his reputation, here at this borderland. What does he think he’s doing?
