Scripture Reading: The Baptism of Jesus

By a show of hands, how many of you can remember the day you were baptized? Okay, well a few. There are such things as adult or youth baptisms when you actually have a memory of that. Most of us were probably baptized as infants so we probably don’t remember the day that we were baptized. That’s certainly the case in my family. I don’t remember the day that I was baptized but I do remember the day that my younger brother Tom was baptized. I would have been five years old when my brother Tom was baptized. My mom had just given him a bottle and was unsuccessful in burping the baby. But what my mom was unable to do, the Holy Spirit successfully accomplished. For there while being presented and blessed as a new child of God, echoing through that huge congregational sanctuary was the unhindered sound of little Tommy belching for all to hear. Of course, you know as a five-year-old that was funny. Needless to say, the congregation erupted into laughter and we all did enjoy the moment. A voice from heaven said, “This is my son the beloved with whom I am well pleased.”
