There are many things about this text that are troubling. We have the slave girl who has the gift of divination, she can foresee the future and she makes her owners a lot of money. Well, Paul and Silas come to town and she’s following them around for days yelling, “These men are slaves of the most high God.” Now, I don’t know exactly what to think of that, a slave girl calling someone else a slave of God, that’s kind of curious. But it goes on for a few days and Paul just gets annoyed, so he turns around, completely ignores her, and speaks to the spirit that was within her and says, “Get out of her. In doing that he basically makes her worthless to her owners.
