Heads Up!

Heads Up!

Scripture Reading: The Coming of the Son of Man

When I was a kid, like most kids did in the 1960s, I played Little League baseball; where I, with two older brothers already playing Little League, I couldn’t wait until I was eight and could try out for the minors. Where I grew up the minors were determined by age, not by ability. That first year I played for Pittsburgh which was an expansion team and I think we only won two games. But when I was 10, I was old enough for the majors and I was assigned to the Athletics who actually won the championship that summer. All of this sharing of my childhood is leading to a little something that had always bothered me as a little leaguer. Namely, that when someone hit a foul ball into an area where there were players or spectators on the sidelines, someone would inevitably shout, “Heads up.” At that time, I thought as an eight or nine-year-old, I thought, “Okay if I look up as in heads-up, the foul ball may actually hit me in the face.”
