Scripture Reading: Jesus and the Woman of Samaria
I met Stacy Clifford in 2003. I was in the cast of “Pump Boys and Dinettes” at PM&L theater. Stacy was running lights for the show. This was the first of several shows that Stacy and I would share on and off stage roles. It was only a matter of time before Stacy and I developed a friendship that went beyond doing shows together. Eventually, her curiosity got the best of her. She decided it was time to check me out in my professional role as a preacher. So Stacy started attending worship at the summers Community Church where I was serving at the time.
A lot of churches canceled worship today. I didn’t want to cancel worship because I wanted one more opportunity to offer some sentiments that we could carry with us until we meet again as a faith community. Right now I don’t know if we will worship next week because some of our best advisors are leaning in that direction, that we take a break to let some of this chaos and fear and reality progress and hopefully pass.
In the next few days our best advisers will most likely recommend suspending worship for a few weeks to reduce the chances of the coronavirus advancing and thus putting more people at risk. The irony is that three weeks would take us to Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week and Easter. We will see but as John writes, “the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshipers will worship the father in spirit and truth, for the father seeks such as these to worship Him. God is spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to Jesus I know that Messiah is coming who is called Christ. When he comes he will proclaim all things to us. Jesus said to her, ‘I am he the one who is speaking to you.’ “
