“Collateral Damage”

Scripture Reading: The Flight to Egypt / Herod Kills the Children / The Return to Nazareth

Sven Hansen was a carpenter. He was a carpenter by trade, but he also enjoyed volunteering whenever and wherever he could. One time Sven’s church needed someone to build some wooden crates in order for them to be able to ship some supplies and clothing they were sending to an orphanage in China. Sven rose to the occasion and he immediately got started on building the crates. When he finished, he helped pack them full of assorted sundries and clothing and then load them onto the truck that would take them to the distribution center, kind of like what we do with our shoebox project. On his way home, Sven reached into his shirt pocket expecting to find his glasses but they were gone. He quickly began to mentally retrace his steps and the only explanation he could come up with was that his glasses must have slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and had fallen into one of the crates. He chuckled to himself as he realized that his brand-new glasses we’re on their way to China. Well Sven was a frugal man and was kicking himself for being so careless, but he soon wrote it off as collateral damage as he knew he was doing a good thing by helping his church with a worthy mission project.
