I’m excited to be here today. This is the first Sunday of Lent. I grew up not knowing anything about Lent, can you believe that? I didn’t know anything about the history of the church or any real connection to anything other than my congregation and the Bible that we read on Sunday mornings. To seventeen year old Jeffry, Christian history, it seemed to start with Jesus. He hung around a couple of years and then there was a guy who fed Christians to the lions I think, and the Pope was the antichrist I was taught, and then there was this guy who Martin Luther King was named after who pounded some stuff on the doors, and then like a long time later my pastor got sick of everybody else’s church and started his own church. That was my thought of the history of the church. It wasn’t grounded very much in the actual tradition.
