Pastor’s Pen – Dec. 2023

Pastor’s Pen – Dec. 2023

Welcome to Advent! It has arrived, or will on Sunday, December 3rd. Advent, like Jesus himself, will arrive whether we feel ready or not. Advent will arrive whether we feel excited or depressed, angry, calm, or somewhere in between. And that is good news, in fact, that is THE GOOD NEWS. No matter what is right or wrong in the world or in our hearts, Jesus is right beside us.

What are some ways you can experience Advent right where you are and before you welcome Christmas?

  1. Pick up an Advent Devotional at Church. The devotionals have a blue cover and have the name of our Advent theme on them: How Does a Weary World Rejoice? The writers at Sanctified Art have collaborated to bring you poetry, music, art, and Bible reflection that helps you be present in the story of Advent. There are also two pages (pages 1 & 2) of journaling or discussion questions for you to turn into conversations with others or with God. The writers have written original Advent lyrics to familiar carols and put a QR code in the book so you can hear the tune. If you need help working the code, just ask me. It is just a matter of opening your phone camera and pressing the link that shows up. We will be singing the first song in worship this week.

  2. Attend an Advent Class! Advent Class 1 will have already passed by the time you read this, but you can simply show up to Advent Class 2 at any of the three times it is offered. You can still experience Class 2 even if you didn’t go to Class 1. Class 2 is offered 3 Times:

“The Magi’s Journey from Disappointment to True Treasure & Our Journey from Advent to Christmas and Epiphany”

Sunday, December 3 at 11:15 AM
Tuesday, December 5 at 1:30 PM
Wednesday, December 6 at 6:30 PM

  3. Attend our special Blue Christmas Service titled “A Worship Service for the Weary.” This is a service that is designed for people who are dealing with loss during the Advent/Christmas season. This is a difficult time of year for many as they deal with fresh loss or an old hurt that resurfaces. The loss can be the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a relationship, a pet…anything that brings on feelings of loss and grief. This is a service designed to honor our hurting selves at this time of year. We will have scripture, questions, and luminary lighting to honor our feelings. Attend the service for yourself or in support of others. Please tell your neighbors and friends and invite them to attend. It will be the first service in our newly renovated chapel.

All of this is planned around our regular Sunday Advent services at 10 AM in the Sanctuary. Each service will feature a daily theme around the Advent theme, How Does a Weary World Rejoice? Remember that if you cannot attend in person, you can join us live on YouTube or catch the service recorded through our website or Facebook page.
